RCVS COUNCIL CALLS FOR BAN ON NON-THERAPEUTIC TAIL-DOCKING IN DOGS............
Click here to read the full Press Statement.

www.bsava.com
" The BSAVA Council is of the opinion that the docking of puppies' tails is an unnecessary mutilation and urges the RCVS to promote legislation leading to the outlawing of the procedure, unless the tail has previously been injured and the injury cannot be managed by any other means."

www.bva.co.uk
"Good-luck with your initiative, which has our full support.  The BVA has long been opposed to this mutilation, that over 90% of veterinary surgeons find abhorrent.  We will continue to campaign vigorously to ensure that non-therapeutic docking, both cosmetic and prophylactic, is completely banned."

BVNA has joined the BVA and BSAVA in expressing its support for thecampaign against the non-therapeutic tail docking on dogs. Despite taildocking being illegal, except where performed by a Veterinary Surgeon in thebest interests of a dog, the practice still continues, and the latest AnimalWelfare Bill still leaves the issue of docking open to interpretation, andmay still be permitted by way of an exemption clause in secondarylegislation. The BSAVA has provided posters to display in your practice and a clientquestionnaire to help build data on public opinion, both available on www.bsava.com
The 155 Veterinary Nurses listed, alphabetically, below all support
a complete ban on all non- therapeutic docking of dogs' tails.
If you would like to be added to the list please email us at: info@vetsagainstdocking.co.uk

"At last the goverment have recognised that tail docking is cruel and pointless, lets just hope a complete ban is included in the new Animal Welfare Bill and that anyone found to be still carrying out tail docking can be prosecuted.
I think that general public awareness of tail docking is very important, as one of the other nurses wrote people think these dogs are born like this!
By raising public awareness that tail docking is not normal but is in actual fact curel and unnecessary, hopefully people would choose to buy a dog with a tail. It would be nice to have a petition for the VN's to sign,* there are lots of us out there who have strong feelings about this subject."

" I am a V.N I have been working in practice since I was 17 years old and am 26 now. All my time in nursing all though I love my job very much, I have been shocked by the amount of dogs you see day in and day out that are docked and not just clients but a lot of veterinary staff also. I find this distressing obviously as a V.N I came into this profession as I care about animals they are my life. I run puppy clubs and if I mention to any one about their puppy being docked they always get defensive and are very shocked that I mention it. It is as though it is normal for it to be docked and that no one really thinks about how or why it is done. When you see veterinary staff with docked dogs also it is not a good example. I feel the kennel club should stop placing dogs with docked tails in shows as this will make a difference. It is something I have felt very strongly against my whole life and as you can imagine I have seen some bad docking's. . It is wonderful to see that finely some one has the correct attitude about it and I am very pleased to have my say and I would like to help the campaign. Good luck."

"I am not a vet but a vet nurse and have helped with this procedure in the past, its barbaric and to say puppies do not feel pain is ludicrous, most breeders refuse to stay in the room whilst we remove dew claws not alone tails so how would they know if the puppies scream or not. Tthe VN world is behind you too."

Diane Chrismas VN A1 C&G cert in exotics BVNA
"I once had a client say to me that tails in those breeds that had short tails weren't dock they were born like it!!!! Its the public that need educating and I hope that this ban fulfills this need for knowledge."

"I agree with other comments that public awareness is so important, as many people do believe that dogs were born without tails, and if they knew how distressing it is to both pups and mum if present, let alone the nurses helping with the procedure, they may change their way of thinking."

"I just wondered how you thought VNs could get involved - I know we may
not be recognised as a registered professional body but surely our views
count too? is there a similar petition for VNs to sign - I know nurses who
have been working for a number of years who have previously been in
situations where they have refused to hold puppies for vets to dock their
tails!! 13_3_06. I have emailed previously and added my name to the list however
would now like to add the names of all of our nurses here at the Blue Cross

"There is no evidence to support the continuation of this practice for any reason. The fundamental principle that underlies our work within the veterinary sector is animal welfare, and therefore we cannot allow tail docking to continue."

Sam French VN
"This cruel, pointless and harmful procedure needs to be stopped and in fact should have become an historical issue a long time ago. I truely believe is the responsibility of the veterinary profession to be advocates for the animals that we choose to care for. So rather than dock in order to pander to clients ideas of "normality", should we not rather educate both the breeder and the buyers of docked breed as to the benefits and beauty of having a canine companion with a tail ?"

"
This is a cruel and unecessary procedure done mainly for selfish reasons by breeders. We need to educate the public so the number of puppies bought with docked tails is reduced. It is shocking to think that some people think they are just born that way. Also if the kennel club refused to except docked tails in the show ring then it would stop almost overnight, the kennel club have a huge part to play in the fact that this practise is still continuing.Dogs are supposed to have tails so why multilate them, surely its better to see the breed with their tails as nature intended! I have never had to assist in tail docking but if asked I would refuse!"

"Like many others, I am 100% against docking. I have been a nurse for 24 years and have never seen a tail injury on a dog that did not respond to treatment. However, I have seen several cases of post-docking infections in puppies, some of which died. We need to make the showing of docked dogs prohibited, so that this awful mutilation dies out. Bring on the day when docking is consigned to the history books."

I like so many am shocked that docking still goes on. The public need to be made aware that it is a cruel and needless thing to do to any animal. "
I work in a mixed practice that has in the past supported tail docking.
As an unqualified nurse I had been requested to help with the unnecessary tail docking. Each and every time I found the experience distressing and barbaric. I firmly believe that should tail docking be required (ie: a dog that has had tail injuries beforehand), the animal should have a full anaesthetic, a sterile environment, analgesics and antibiotics."
